Styles of Hearing Aids
There are several different styles of hearing aids available, each designed to cater to different needs, preferences, and levels of hearing loss. Here are some of the common styles of hearing aids:
Behind-the-Ear (BTE)
BTE hearing aids consist of a small plastic case worn behind the ear, connected to an earmould or a thin tube that delivers sound into the ear. BTE devices are suitable for various degrees of hearing loss and are known for their durability and ease of use. This style is mostly seen in NHS hearing aids.
Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)
Also known as Receiver-in-the-Ear (RITE): RIC or RITE hearing aids are similar to BTE devices, but they are more discreet. They have a small housing behind the ear and a thin wire or tube with a receiver (speaker) placed inside the ear canal. The receiver is connected to the housing by a thin wire. RIC/RITE devices offer excellent sound quality, and their open-fit design reduces the feeling of occlusion in the ear canal.
In-the-Ear (ITE)
ITE hearing aids are custom-made to fit inside the outer ear. They are larger than RIC or BTE devices as they house all the necessary components in a single unit. ITE devices can accommodate a broader range of features, including telecoil (for better compatibility with telephones and hearing loop systems), volume controls, and larger batteries. They are relatively easy to handle and adjust, making them suitable for individuals with dexterity issues.
In-the-Canal (ITC)
ITC (like CIC) hearing aids are smaller and fit partially or entirely within the ear canal. They are less visible when worn and provide a more discreet solution. ITC devices are custom-made to fit the shape of the ear canal. These styles offer cosmetic appeal but have limitations in terms of battery size, features, and suitability for more severe hearing loss.
Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)
CIC (like ITC) hearing aids are smaller and fit partially or entirely within the ear canal. They are less visible when worn and provide a more discreet solution. CIC devices are even smaller than ITC and sit deeper inside the canal, making them nearly invisible. These styles offer cosmetic appeal but have limitations in terms of battery size, features, and suitability for more severe hearing loss.
Invisible-in-Canal (IIC) and Extended-Wear Hearing Aids
IIC and extended-wear hearing aids are the smallest and most discreet styles. IIC devices sit deep within the ear canal, making them virtually invisible when worn. Extended-wear hearing aids are placed in the ear canal by a healthcare professional and can be worn for several months continuously. Both options offer cosmetic appeal but have limitations in terms of power, features, and suitability for certain hearing losses.
It’s important to note that the most suitable style of hearing aid for you depends on factors such as your degree of hearing loss, ear anatomy, dexterity, cosmetic preferences, and lifestyle needs. Consulting with an audiologist or hearing care professional can help determine the most appropriate style and features that align with your specific requirements.
