Is there parking?
There’s paid parking on Landport Terrace and Kings Road.
What happens in the session?
During the session we will have a chat to find out what issues you’ve been having. The procedure will then be fully explained to you including any possible risks/complications and you will have a chance to ask any questions you may have. Once you are happy to go ahead you will be asked to sign the consent form. You will be asked to lie on the couch in a semi-reclined position and make yourself comfortable. After looking in your ears with the microscope we will start the wax removal process. As long as you have softened the wax sufficiently with olive oil prior to treatment it should be painless. It can be a little noisy though, particularly once the ear starts to become clear again.
We allow 30 minutes for the appointment for both ears but sometimes it can be much quicker than this. Occasionally if the wax is still very hard we might not be able to remove it all in one appointment. If this is the case you will be offered a follow up appointment free of charge.

Is there anything I need to do in preparation for the session?
Yes. It is recommended to use some olive oil (such as Earol) in your ears for at least 3 days prior to your appointment. Please note, olive oil is preferable to other types of ear drops if possible.
What happens if you can't get all the wax out?
Occasionally if the wax is still very hard we might not be able to remove it all in one appointment. If this is the case you will be offered a follow up appointment free of charge.
What if I can't make the appointment?
If you are unable to attend your appointment for whatever reason please contact us on 023 9200 4426.

Why should I choose Southsea Ear Clinic instead of a different ear clinic?
At Southsea Ear clinic we always use a state of the art ENT surgical binocular microscope, coupled with an ENT grade suction unit which provides controlled, safe and relatively quiet suction.
The use of this kind of microscope affords the clinician the best options of magnification and depth awareness possible in order to work with the precision needed in the tiny space of the outer ear canal.
Some other providers offering ‘microsuction’ do not in fact use a microscope, but magnifying goggles called loupes. These loupes do not provide the same level of magnification or 3D vision and are therefore not as safe.
What is microsuction?
Microsuction it the removal of ear wax using a gentle suction machine whilst viewing the ear through a microscope.

Is microsuction better than ear syringing?
There are several studies that highlight the risks of ear syringing or irrigation with water. Even pre COVID-19 it was becoming much harder to have this procedure done on the NHS as GPs were becoming reluctant to provide this service whilst there was a safer alternative available. The most obvious benefits of microsuction when compared to syringing are that the clinician can always see what they are doing making it much safer, and that the removal of wax using suction as opposed to water to flush out the ear canal is much gentler on the ear, and much less likely to cause any trauma. Additionally, because it is a dry procedure, it is safe to perform microsuction on an ear with a perforated eardrum or an infection
What payment methods do you accept?
You can pay with credit or debit cards or with Apple/Google Pay. We also accept cash.
